Greece: record heat and fires across the country, a huge fire devastates the island of Lesbos

Record heat and fires also in Greece. Temperatures have hit 40 degrees and will rise again in the first few days of next week.

the authorities have ordered the evacuation of the lively seaside resort of Vatera, on the island of Lesbos, in the eastern Aegean, due to a forest fire that affected the first houses of the village. The fire, which broke out this morning, hit the first houses of the village and is considered difficult as it is burning on two fronts, also threatening the village of Vrisa.

In addition to ground firefighters, three Lesvos-based seaplane airplanes are trying to keep the fire under control, with reinforcements arriving from northern Greece.

Other smaller fires have hit the Peloponnese Peninsula.
