Merkel: For Putin, only power has value

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended her policy towards Russia before the February invasion of Ukraine, saying her power to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin had run out.

She said she had tried to organize talks between the Russian president and the French president Emmanuel Macron in the summer of 2021.

“But I didn’t have the power anymore. Everyone knew, in the fall I would leave”, she said.

After four terms as chancellor, Merkel left office in December 2021. She made a final visit to Moscow in August 2021.

She said that “for Putin, only power has value”, reports the BBC.
