Poland installs monitoring equipment on the border with Belarus

Polish officials on Friday inspected the initial stage of installing high-tech monitoring equipment along a metal wall on the border with Belarus.

Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said the 5.5-meter-high wall has reduced attempts at illegal border crossing tenfold.

Poland’s border police said the daily number of migrant crossings had dropped to a few dozen compared to thousands in 2021 and earlier this year.

The construction of the wall aims to prevent what Polish authorities say are efforts by Belarus’s authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, to push thousands of migrants into Poland and thereby destabilize the EU.

Traversing difficult terrain and frigid temperatures have resulted in the deaths of at least 27 migrants, with Polish authorities often having to come to the rescue of groups stranded in remote swamps.
