Brazilian civil police confirmed that at least 18 people died during a police operation against organized crime carried out yesterday in Complexo do Alemão, a favela in the north of Rio de Janeiro.

The victims are a policeman, a woman who lived in the area and 16 members of organized crime groups. About 400 agents, 10 armored vehicles and four helicopters were mobilized for the operation.

“We are afraid of living here. Where we are? In Afghanistan? In a war? In Iraq? They want war, so send them to Iraq,” says one of the residents.
