The UN asks Musk to respect human rights on Twitter

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has written an open letter to Elon Musk, calling on him to ensure that human rights are at the heart of Twitter’s management.

“Twitter is part of the global revolution and has transformed the way we communicate. But I wrote to him with concern and fear regarding the public sphere and Twitter’s role in it,” said Turk.

The letter followed Musutk’s announcement of mass layoffs at Twitter, including all human rights staff except two members of the AI ethics team.

This is not “an encouraging start”, Turk said.

The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, bought the social platform Twitter at the end of October, worth 44 billion dollars.

He has said he wants Twitter to have fewer restrictions on the content posted on it.
