US cruisers in the Taiwan Strait, Beijing: “Maximum alert”

The ships Uss Antietam and Uss Chancellorsville in transit “out of territorial waters”, states the US Navy. The Taipei government: “Nothing unusual

It is the first time that this has happened since the beginning of the military maneuvers that China has conducted near the island, in a crescendo of tension between the US and Beijing. Two American warships passed through the 160-kilometer-wide Taiwan Strait. These are the missile cruisers Uss Antietam and Uss Chancellorsville, which officially travel “through the waters where the freedoms of navigation and overflight on the high seas apply in accordance with international law”, reads a US Navy press release, where it is also specified that “up to now there has been no interference from foreign military forces”.

“These ships,” writes the US Navy, transit “through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state. The transit of ships through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the commitment of the United States to an Indo -Pacific free and open. The United States Army flies, sails and operates wherever international law allows it. “

Beijing: “Maximum alert”

The response of the Chinese authorities was not long in coming. The spokesman for the eastern part of the People’s Liberation Army of China, Shi Yi, reported that the armed forces have been in a state of “maximum alert” since this morning. “The US Navy cruisers Chancellorsville and Antietam crossed the Taiwan Strait on August 28, attracting everyone’s attention,” writes Shi Yi on social media, “the EPL East Combat Command Zone escorted the cruisers Americans, exercising full control over their businesses. The command units are on full alert to stop any provocation in a timely manner ”.

Instead, the Taipei Defense Ministry said it monitored the passage of the two ships and found no unusual activity.
