Who are the possible candidates for the future British premier after the resignation of Liz Truss

After the resignation of Liz Truss, the race for the next British Prime Minister opens. Among the most eligible names are Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, but a return of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is not excluded.

Just 44 days into her mandate, British Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced her resignation. A decision that opens the door to new elections with which the citizens of the Channel will be called to choose the new prime minister.

The availabilities must be presented by next Monday and must be endorsed by at least 100 Tory deputies, which means that there cannot be more than three candidates given that the number of conservative MPs is 357. Among the most eligible names are those of Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, who have already raced during last summer’s primary, but a return of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also possible.

Running to replace Boris Johnson last summer, Rishi Sunak then collided with Liz Truss, losing. Elected to Parliament in 2015, for the constituency of Richmond, North Yorkshire, he made his name in 2020 during the pandemic. Conservative MP Angela Richardson said: “I supported him this summer and to date my idea hasn’t changed.” According to the bookmakers, the superfavorite is Sunak the favorite.

Equally favorite is Penny Mordaunt. The current leader of the House of Commons, eliminated in the fourth round of voting during the conservative party primary, is given second place by the bookmakers in the event of a new conservative party primary. In 2019, Mordaunt made history by becoming the UK’s first defense secretary.

A return of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson should not be ruled out either. According to what was reported by the English press, in fact, Bojo, after the news of Truss’s resignation, would have rushed back from the Dominican Republic. A candidacy of him would completely change the cards on the table, as evidenced by a YouGov poll, which gives him 32% of the preferences against 23% of Sunak

The other names in the running are those of Ben Wallace, defense secretary who has strong support in Parliament given his management of the country’s role in the war in Ukraine, Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman.
